ANALGESIC AND MUSCLE RELAXANT ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF ANTIGONON LEPTOPUS

Poonam Ranjan, Dilip Kumar Tiwari, Kishu Tripathi*

The objective of the present study is to investigate the analgesic and muscle relaxant activities of ethanolic extract of leaves of Antigonon leptopus (EEAL) in Albino rat by different pharmacological techniques. Both the analgesic and muscle relaxant activity of the ethanolic extract of A. leptopus leaves at doses levels of 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/kg p.o. in rat was determined by calculating reaction time (in sec) of thermal stimuli in tail immersion model and the time spent (in sec) on the resolving rod in rotarod apparatus, respectively. Diazepam for rota rod test and tramadol HCl for tail immersion model were employed as reference standard. The results were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Dunnetís multiple comparison test, p<0.05 was considered significant. All responses were observed as concentration dependent manner. Present studies were suggested that Antigonon leptopus leaves exhibited good analgesic and muscle relaxant proper-ties and this would lead some support for its use in traditional medicine practice.
